What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding involves applying a tooth-coloured resin material to your teeth to repair damage or improve appearance. In just a single short appointment, this fast and effective treatment can change the shape, colour, and size of your teeth, and help you achieve the smile you deserve.

The composite material can be built directly on your tooth, making it a comfortable and non-invasive cosmetic procedure. It perfectly mimics tooth enamel and can be colour-matched to your natural tooth colour if used for a repair. Composite bonding requires a degree of skill to accurately build up the shape of a tooth from scratch. Our highly skilled dentists can provide truly impressive results.

Why have composite bonding?

  • Unlike other types of restorative and cosmetic treatments, there is no need to remove any of the tooth to make space for the restoration.
  • The treatment is quick. There is no need to take impressions or have restorations built in the lab. Everything happens in our practice.
  • As we can match the composite to your tooth colour, it’s a very aesthetic treatment.

Advantages of composite bonding

Natural-looking results: Composite resin mimics the natural colour and translucency of your teeth, delivering aesthetically pleasing results that blend seamlessly with your smile.

Non-invasive: Unlike some other cosmetic treatments, composite bonding doesn’t require the removal of healthy tooth structure. It’s a conservative approach that preserves your natural teeth.

Quick and convenient: In most cases, composite bonding can be completed in a single appointment, saving you time, and reducing the need for multiple visits to the dentist.

Versatile: Composite bonding can be used to address a wide range of dental issues, including chipped teeth, gaps, discoloration, and misshapen teeth.

Minimal discomfort: Patients typically experience little to no discomfort during the procedure, and there’s no downtime for recovery.

Cost-effective: Compared to other cosmetic dental treatments, composite bonding is an affordable option for improving your smile.

What is involved in composite bonding treatment?

At your initial consultation, we ensure you are in good oral health and suitable for treatment. We ask you about your ideal results and give you the chance to ask us any questions. We also make a note of the shade of your natural teeth, or your ideal new shade, so the composite can be colour-matched.

Your composite bonding treatment happens in one short appointment. We first dry the tooth and prepare the surface with a special acidic gel. This creates a rough surface for the composite to properly bond to.

We apply the composite material in layers, gradually building up the accurate shape of your tooth. Using a blue light, we harden the composite, which sets immediately. We then polish the composite so it looks shiny, healthy, and just like a natural tooth.

Frequently asked questions
Can composite bonding be used on more than one tooth?

Yes, composite bonding can be used to repair a single tooth or used on multiple teeth to transform the appearance of your smile. At your first appointment, we discuss with you what your goals are from your composite bonding treatment.

Is composite bonding treatment painful?

Composite bonding is completely pain free, which is part of the reason why it is so popular with many patients looking for an effective and cosmetic repair. None of your natural tooth structure or enamel needs to be removed to make way for the treatment so you will feel no pain or discomfort.

Can composite bonding be reversed?

Yes, composite bonding is completely reversible. If you change your mind over time and no longer want the composite bonding material on your tooth, it can simply be removed. There are no lasting effects on your natural teeth and they will return to the way they were before treatment.

How do I look after my tooth following composite bonding treatment?

Composite is invulnerable to bacteria and decay, but the natural tooth underneath isn’t. Great oral hygiene at home will keep your tooth lasting for as long as possible. You may require maintenance on these restorations, particularly if you like to drink tea or coffee or enjoy other food and drinks that stain your teeth. This can easily be monitored at your regular check-ups.

How long does composite bonding last?

How long composite bonding lasts does vary between patients and depends on lifestyle choices. However, you can expect your teeth bonding to last between four to eight years and up to ten years with proper care. After this, your dentist may need to touch up the existing bonding or replace it.

How much does it cost for composite bonding?

On average, composite bonding costs around £250 – £350 per tooth.

How long does composite bonding last on front teeth?

On average, composite bonding lasts between 4-8 years. It does depend on the bonding location and your lifestyle and habits. Your two front teeth are exposed daily, whether that’s when you are eating or speaking, so these front teeth may need more maintenance and may need adjusting by your dentist.

What are the disadvantages of composite bonding?

Although composite bonding is strong, and durable, it isn’t as durable as your natural tooth enamel. Nor is it as strong as porcelain and other materials used in veneers and crowns. You need to be careful when biting down on particularly hard foods such as a crusty baguette. It is also not stain resistant, so it can absorb colour staining foods if eaten often and over a prolonged period.
